Daniel F. Pinnow

Portrait of Daniel F. Pinnow|

Working with Daniel F. Pinnow means no standard lectures and no easy answers—instead, you get a trainer who ensures the real issues are brought to the table, asks uncomfortable questions, and holds up an honest mirror. It is precisely this direct, undogmatic engagement with one’s own leadership persona that has led over 1,500 executives from MDAX-listed and medium-sized enterprises to fundamentally transform their understanding of leadership since 2000.

This expertise is grounded not merely in theory, but in decades of personal experience in top-level leadership:

Pioneer of systemic leadership: Since 1998, Daniel F. Pinnow has been a leading thinker in the field of systemic leadership in the German-speaking world, as well as the founder and Managing Partner of the *Akademie für systemische Führung* (Academy for Systemic Leadership).

Top-management experience: Served as Managing Director of the *Akademie für Führungskräfte der Wirtschaft GmbH* (Bad Harzburg & Überlingen)—one of Germany’s market-leading management training companies—from 1997 to 2012. Concurrently served on the Executive Board of Cognos AG (the parent company, with over 70 locations and more than 3,000 employees) from 2003 to 2007. Prior to this, gained leadership experience as an HR Manager at Airbus Group and E.ON Ruhrgas AG.

Academic background: Studied Business Administration, Business Psychology, and Social Sciences at the universities of Cologne and Wuppertal. Held a teaching position in Personnel Leadership and HR Management at the Technical University of Munich (a designated "University of Excellence") from 2004 to 2012. Appointed Associate Professor of Leadership at the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing in 2007. Held a teaching position in Leadership & Organization at Hochschule Fresenius in Munich from 2012 to 2016. Author: Author of the seminal work *Führen – Worauf es wirklich ankommt* (Leadership – What Really Matters), first published by Springer Gabler in 2005 (now in its 6th edition, with over 15,000 copies sold in Germany). In 2008, it became one of the first German management books to be translated into Chinese (China Machine Press); to date, it has sold over 250,000 copies and ranks among the top 10 best-selling business books in China. An English translation was published by Springer Science+Business Media in 2011; since then, it has been released in the USA, Australia, the UK, and Canada, selling over 40,000 copies.

Media Presence: A sought-after interviewee on topics such as leadership, modern corporate organization, and education management, appearing on ARD, N-TV, Deutschlandfunk, SWR, and others.

His Approach as a Trainer

Pinnow does not rely on a standard toolkit of methods or traditional lectures. His seminars are deliberately kept small and are consistently focused on practical application and personal development:

Leadership is experienced firsthand rather than merely explained. He works with real-life situations and dynamics drawn from the participants' daily leadership roles, ensuring immediate practical application rather than ineffective theory.
Candor over coddling. Participants describe him as direct and—when necessary—challenging, yet always constructive and driven by a clear purpose: achieving genuine progress rather than offering superficial validation.
A systemic rather than technical perspective. Leadership is not taught as a mere technique; instead, it is presented as an interplay of personality, team dynamics, and organizational context.

The Impact of His Seminars

Many past participants—including managing directors, board members, and entrepreneurs—describe their time with Pinnow as far more than a standard leadership seminar; for them, it was an experience that continued to resonate in both their professional and personal lives. Participants report having re-synchronized their self-image and the image others have of them, recognized patterns that had previously held them back, and emerged from the seminar with a clarity that extends far beyond their professional lives.
